The origins of Chashme Shahi trace back to 1632, during the reign of the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, renowned for his love of art and architecture. It was commissioned by the emperor himself and designed by his governor Ali Mardan Khan, as a tribute to the beauty of a natural spring discovered by the revered Kashmiri saint, Rupa Bhawani. This sacred spring, believed to have healing properties, became the focal point of the garden, lending it an aura of tranquility and reverence.

Spread over a modest yet enchanting area, Chashme Shahi is the smallest of the three prominent Mughal gardens in Srinagar, alongside Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh. Despite its size, it captures the grandeur of Persian-style landscaping, seamlessly integrating cascading terraces, vibrant flowerbeds, and flowing water channels that descend in a three-tiered layout. The garden’s meticulous design reflects the Persian principle of charbagh, where symmetrical patterns create a paradise on earth.

As visitors step through the arched entrance, they are greeted by the gentle murmur of water flowing through intricately carved stone channels. The air, tinged with the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers, carries an undeniable sense of peace.
